"In the muggy thick of night, you wake up wheezing. You feel her weight on your chest. You smell swamp gas, newt scat, frog spawn, the kind of black water that grows green fur. The raw muscles of her rump press against your sternum. Strong hands pin your arms to the bed. Her fungus-tainted toenails dig into your neck. You feel the hot suck of her mouth, pulling your breath into her darkness, turning her parched lungs back into meat. You think you hear her snorting. You think you hear her cackling. Or is that the crickets screaming? Summer is almost over, and the crickets are in a panic to mate and die.
How did she get in? Floated up from a flood zone, travelled in a fog bank, oozed through a crack in the window to ride you.
Tonight, you open your eyes. The skinless hag glows pomegranate red. As she leeches your energy, her veins bulge, strobing a bioluminescent blue. You don’t dare struggle or she’ll steal your skin, slip it right off like a hunter flaying a rabbit with two neat slits and three tugs. You can’t even cry out. Your lips are paralyzed, your tongue as dead as a lump of pickled beef. Only your eyeballs move, rotating in your skull as you watch traffic light flicker across the Boo Hag. When she finally jumps off you, she melts into pink mist, floats for a spell before seeping out into darkness. You wonder where she keeps her skin. You picture it hanging in a moldy closet, pale and crinkled like the shedding of a snake. Any woman in daylight could be her, smooth-skinned and smirking, her ripe lips parted, breathing your breath."
